RELEASE NUMBER: 51 RELEASE DATE: 2022-09-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2022-05-11 through 2022-06-21 PRODUCTS RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: EDR, RDR, BROWSE The EDR and RDR datasets are incremented with the addition of new data from mission phase LRO_ES_115. RDR profiles are geolocated with mission definitive orbits and will be reprocessed for improved geolocation using GRGM900C orbits and re-released. On day 136 in 2022, LOLA was powered off between 0045 and 1313 hrs due to and eclipse, and there is a corresponding gap in data provided in ES_115. Previously delivered RDR profiles from LRO_ES_99 through LRO_ES_113 have been replaced after reprocessing of the timing information. Further information on the reprocessing is given below. There is no detectable change in the BROWSE files for these RDRs and they are therefore not redelivered. BROWSE is provided for the new LRO_ES_115 RDRs. A total of 6,126 RDR and 499 EDR profiles are included with this release. The SOFTWARE_VERSION_ID in these timing reprocessed and 900C geolocated RDRs is updated to "5.12" to reflect reprocessing of the timing information contained in the RDRs. The LOLA instrument is synchronized with the spacecraft clock on board LRO, driven by an ultrastable oscillator clock that emits precise time signals to all instruments, and a high- resolution frequency standard used by LOLA for altimetry timing. The combined clock time is referred to as Mission Elapsed Time, or MET. A continuous equation of time relating MET to Terrestrial Dynamic Time (TDT) is applied in LOLA software to relate instrument telemetry to the ground- based ephemerides and the discontinuous Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The LOLA accuracy requirement is more stringent than the nominal clock time generated on board by the LRO software. The LOLA TDT function is fit to the time correlation files (SCLK) generated weekly at the LRO MOC, to account for USO offset, drift and aging as well as exceptional events (safing, radiation damage) on board the spacecraft. The function is a piecewise-continuous low-degree polynomial. Each update to the polynomial is given a new SOFTWARE_VERSION_ID to identify which TDT function was used in processing. The confidence level associated with the time after each update is approximately one millisecond. After a period of one or more years however the accuracy becomes degraded due to the random walk behavior of the USO and the imprecision of the polynomial so that an update and reprocessing is required. RELEASE NUMBER: 39 RELEASE DATE: 2019-09-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2009-07-13 to 2019-07-24 PRODUCTS RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: EDR, RDR, BROWSE, GDR In Release 39, the EDR and RDR datasets are incremented with the addition of new data from mission phases LRO_ES_82 through LRO_ES_84. Previously delivered data from mission phases LRO_ES_78 through LRO_ES_81 have been recalculated using the GRAIL-based precision GRGM900C orbits, and have been redelivered with the same filenames, with the exception of LRO_ES_79/LOLARDR_190472121, which is geolocated using mission FDF orbits. A recalculated version will replace this file in a later release. Global and polar roughness grids have been delivered, in global cylindrical and polar stereographic projections, respectively. The global dataset is presented at 32 pixels per degree, using data from Commissioning through LRO_ES_19. In addition to the mean roughness values, quantiles of 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 are also mapped separately: each quantile is sensitive to a different roughness, and therefore geology. Polar stereographic roughness grids for both poles are released. They have a latitudinal extent of 40 degrees from the pole, and a resolution of 1km/pixel, true at the poles. Polar map products are additionally presented with a GMT 'nearneighbor' (NN) weighted average function to create a more continuous product. The polar roughness maps extend to 40.55 degrees N/S, centered on the poles. The data used goes from Commissioning through the Science Mission phase LRO_SM_19, after which conditions were not suitable for the LOLA instrument to yield necessary measurement. The file LDEM_256_00N_90N_180_360_FLOAT.IMG was replaced with a corrected version. The previous version, made available with Release 31, was incorrect: the data between 0-180 degrees were also delivered as those from 180-360. The corresponding scaled integer IMG file was correct, and is left unchanged. The label for EXTRAS/ILLUMINATION/IMG/AVGVISIB_75S_120M_201608.LBL had incorrect LINE and SAMPLE values, and has been replaced. LOLA data through mission phase LRO_ES_52 were used to make these maps, produced using the GMT program suite, version 5.4.2, in pixel registration. The LOLA REF.CAT has been updated. BROWSE for this LOLA RDR release are provided. The previously delivered RDRs from mission phases LRO_ES_61 through LRO_ES_62 have been geolocated using the GRGM900C orbits, and are updated for this release. The corresponding BROWSE images are also updated. A new passive radiometry dataset is added for this release, covering mission phases LRO_ES_14 to LRO_ES_26. The PRADR files calculate radiometry based on solar photons captured by the LOLA detectors when the laser is not firing. This dataset is therefore available only in later mission phases, and covers time periods exclusive from the collection of active radiometry and topography data. A new derived dataset, global slope and slope azimuth maps based on previously released SLDEM2015 topographic maps, is also added. This product is offered as an additional effort by the LOLA science team. Maps are in cylindrical projection with resolutions of 64, 128, 256 an 512 ppd. The PRADR and SLDEM2015 SLOPE data collections will be updated on a best-efforts basis by the LOLA team. Due to the ongoing accumulation of data over the southern hemisphere, the complete set of polar stereographic maps centered over the South Pole has been recreated using data from the entire mission through LRO_ES_31. Relative to previous product releases using the coordinate system "MEAN EARTH/POLAR AXIS OF DE421", the topographic data are rotated by a few minutes of an arc, which corresponds to a shift in geolocation of approximately one km at the surface. The accompanying topographic spherical harmonic expansion is therefore similarly transformed. The RDR redelivery in Release Number 13 is due to new geolocation of the LOLA data using precision orbit reconstruction based on a lunar gravity field derived from the NASA GRAIL Discovery Mission. The field GRGM660PRIM was developed by GRAIL team members at the Goddard Space Flight Center using the primary mission dataset acquired by the twin GRAIL spacecraft. GRGM660PRIM has coefficient uncertainties several orders of magnitude lower than fields derived from any previous mission including LRO and allows more precise force modeling over the lunar farside than possible previously. The field is being archived as the GRAIL MOON LGRS CALIBRATED AND RESAMPLED SCIENCE DATASET by the PDS along with the NASA Level 0 and 1 data. The field was truncated at degree and order 270 during the Precision Orbit Determination process. Global slope and roughness maps are also created in cylindrical projection at a resolution of 16 pixels per degree. All higher resolutions, with the exception of 1024 pixels per degree, are redelivered using data through LRO_SM_17. One 1024 pixel tile has been redelivered to correct a minor error in the map product. The second part of the GDR product set, comprised of high resolution polar stereographic map products will be released with or before Data Release Number 10. The SHADR directory contains a new spherical harmonic model of the lunar shape to degree and order 2050, based on the global 64 pixel per degree product. The lower degree and order products have not been updated for this release. In release 5, the coverage numbers were: The LDEM_4 product is 100% sampled (only 33 bins lack shots). The LDEM_16 product is 90% sampled and 10% interpolated. RELEASE NUMBER: 5 RELEASE DATE: 2011-03-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2009-06-18 to 2011-01-31 (entire mission through 2011-01-31) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: EDR, RDR, GDR, SHADR This data release contains data through the end of mission phase LRO_SM_05. Five months of new Experiment Data Record products have been added since Release #4. All Reduced Data Records from the Commissioning, Nominal and Science mission phases 1-5 have been released with precision orbit determination and other refinements described below. The Gridded Data Record products, as IMG and JP2 files, replace those in Release #4, at resolutions up to 512 pixels per degree. Note that the global cylindrical IMG products span longitudes from 0 to 360 degrees East, while the cylindrical JPG products span longitudes from -180 to 180 degrees. Preliminary global digital elevation products at 1024 pixels per degree are added in Release #5, subdivided into 144 tiles as described in the Archive Volume Software Interface Specification, to complete the Standard Products. The Spherical Harmonic Data Record LRO_LTM03_SHA is released, superceding earlier harmonic models. Additional data products are being released in the EXTRAS directory. CHANGES TO LABEL DIRECTORY The LOLARDR.FMT file contained an incorrect START_BYTE for LONGITUDE_1. The corrected file reads: OBJECT = COLUMN COLUMN_NUMBER = 10 NAME = LONGITUDE_1 DATA_TYPE = LSB_INTEGER BYTES = 4 START_BYTE = 41 UNIT = 'DEGREES * (10**7)' MISSING_CONSTANT = -2147483648 DESCRIPTION = "The planetocentric longitude of the spot 1 centroid, in the range -180 to 180 degrees. Negative values should be adjusted by adding 360 degrees to conform with LRO conventions." END_OBJECT = COLUMN CHANGES TO RDR PRODUCT FROM PREVIOUS RELEASES All of the Commissioning and Nominal Mission RDR products are redelivered. Five months of RDR products from the Science Mission phase (15 September 2010 onward) are delivered as well. In all phases the Precision Orbit processing and span of coverage has been improved. Changes in the conversion from LRO mission elapsed time to Terrestrial Time at the sub-millisecond level have been implemented to correct for oscillator drift and ageing during flight. The following changes in software versions 2.50 (pre-2010 day 46) and 2.56 (afterward) have been implemented that affect the altimetric ranges and other measurements: 1) COM offset The frame definition used for the LOLA instrument now incorporates the offset of the instrument range origin with respect to the mean center of mass of LRO. The principal effect of this change is to reduce altitudes by 0.55 m. Consumption of fuel, high-gain antenna motion, and motion of the solar array cause residual variations in this offset that should be less than 0.1 meter in magnitude. 2) System delays In-flight calibration of inter-channel electronic delays has been applied to reduce systematic differences between spots 2-5 ranges from spot 1. These calibrations update those given in [RIRISETAL2010]. The constants added to each range are: spot 2: 0.072 m = 0.48 ns spot 3: 0.036 m = 0.24 ns spot 4: -.060 m = -.40 ns spot 5: -.003 m = -.02 ns 3) Geoid height - LLGM-1 vs GLGM-3 vs LP150Q Earlier versions of the RDR data used the LP150Q gravity field truncated to degree and order 60 for the reference geoid shape. The current release uses the LLGM-1 field, a refinement of GLGM-3 [MAZARICOETAL2010] based on LRO and historical tracking. This field is an interim product that is tuned to the LRO polar orbit for tracking analysis, but not the best overall geoid. 4) noise counts and radiometry The rate of noise triggers on each detector provides a passive measurement of the lunar background at 1064 nm due to reflected solar illumination. The LOLARDR.FMT descriptions of the BACKGROUND_1 through 5 columns should read UNIT = 'COUNTS' DESCRIPTION = "Background noise counts at detector 1 using the noise counter interval. The Earth and lunar events, as well as glitches resulting from the energy measurement are included as counts." The previous description read: UNIT = 'PICOWATTS' DESCRIPTION = "Background noise power at detector 1 using the noise counter interval, minus the Earth and lunar events, accounting for glitches resulting from the energy measurement, as calibrated by the receiver noise model." The radiant power passing through the receiver optics narrow-band filter is so low that the receiver noise provides only a crude measurement. Attempts to calibrate the receiver noise response are ongoing. CHANGES TO GDR PRODUCT FROM PREVIOUS RELEASES As the number of data values to be averaged increases, processing in smaller regions has been necessary. In any given region traversed by LOLA, multiple spots are averaged. A median average is applied to 120-m-size bins (256 pixels per degree), to mitigate occasional blunders, following which the mean of all such bins within a larger pixel is calculated. The same procedure is applied to the 64 and 128 pixel-per-degree products. In previous releases, a median average was applied to all data points, which could conceivably produce a residual bias in mean altitude over heavily cratered lunar terrain. The LDEM_4 product is 100% sampled (only 33 bins lack shots). The LDEM_16 product is 90% sampled and 10% interpolated. The LDEM_64 product is 45% sampled and 55% interpolated. The LDEM_128 product is 28% sampled and 72% interpolated. The LDEM_256 product is 17% sampled and 83% interpolated. All products are interpolated through the gaps using the "surface" program implemented in Generic Mapping Tools (Wessel and Smith, 1997). Gaps as wide as 7 km persist near the equator owing to orbital evolution and offnadir targeting. CHANGES TO SHADR PRODUCT FROM EARLIER RELEASES LRO_LTM03_SHA is produced by resampling the LDEM_64 product to 16 pixels per degree, registered on grid lines. The degree power in the topography is somewhat higher than previous models, especially beyond degree 360, owing to improved sampling. CHANGES TO EXTRAS FROM EARLIER RELEASES The greatest source of uncertainty in lunar planetopotential topography lies in the uncertainty of the lunar potential field, especially on the side inaccessible to tracking from Earth. The geoid is not only flattened at the poles relative to a sphere, but is also perturbed by hundreds of meters over the mare basins and other major features. Lunar geoid shape, truncated to degree and order 60, is provided for several potential field models (LP150Q, SGM100I, GLGM-3) to illustrate the different equipotential datum heights inferred from these potential models. Caution must be exercised when determining downhill direction and slope over long distances, especially on the farside. RELEASE NUMBER: 4 RELEASE DATE: 2010-12-15 DATA COVERAGE: 2009-06-18 to 2010-09-16 (entire mission through 2010-09-16) PRODUCT TYPES RELEASED FOR THIS ARCHIVE: EDR, RDR, GDR, SHADR Orbits are further improved, and applied to previously released data. The improved orbits were produced by the LOLA Precision Orbit Determination Team and include LOLA crossovers and the S-band tracking. Improved orbits were applied to regenerate the majority of RDR products, including some, but not all of the data that were previously released. RDR data files near spacecraft maneuvers are still based on the Navigation Team orbits, as these events were not modeled by the LOLA Precision Orbit Determination Team. In order to clarify and correct the equations relating the map projection to line and sample location, DSMAP.CAT and POLAR_DSMAP.CAT have been significantly revised. As the purpose is to clarify information contained in PDS labels only, our data products are not affected by these revisions. The LOLA Team is including a release of level 3 JP2 files for products at up to 512 pixels per degree corresponding to the tiled IMG products. The JP2 files are accompanied by XML files which are useful for GDAL- compatible readers. However, the PDS file naming convention does not allow for filenames directly useable by GDAL as the former dictates a name such as JP2filename_JP2_AUX.XML, but the latter expects JP2filename.JP2.AUX.XML. The end user will have to rename the XML files to make them useable by most readers. Files with detached labels typically have the label name equivalent to the data file name, with the extension of LBL instead. However, this release contains .IMG and .JP2 files with identical root names (e.g. LDEM_875S_5M.IMG and LDEM_875S_5M.JP2). To avoid identically named labels for diferent files, the JP2 label files have a _JP2 appended to their root names (e.g. LDEM_875S_5M_JP2.LBL. The corresponding IMG file's label would be LDEM_875S_5M.LBL. Several EDR files that were present in earlier deliveries no longer exist in this, and future deliveries as they contained no data. In every label the keyword STRUCTURE is missing the required carat character (^) that designates it as a pointer to a format file. Any PDS software reading this label will not be able to locate the format file that describes the data product format. 2. In some labels the keyword SPACECRAFT_CLOCK_START_COUNT appears twice, and the keyword SPACECRAFT_CLOCK_STOP_COUNT is missing. The second START_COUNT value may be assumed to be the intended STOP_COUNT value. 3. In some labels the pointer to the corresponding data file is incorrect; it is given as "LOLA081102000.DAT". The correct data file name is always the same as the PDS label file name except that it has the extension DAT instead of LBL. 4. In many labels the value of MISSION_PHASE_NAME is incorrectly given as "COMMISSIONING" when it should be "NOMINAL MISSION". The correct mission phase may be determined from the keyword START_TIME. The LOLA Data Node at MIT (imbrium.mit.edu), accessible through the PDS Geosciences Node service Lunar Orbital Data Explorer (ODE, ode.rsl.wustl.edu/moon), is the primary source for LOLA data products. The Data Node is managed by the LOLA Science Team, and it may be updated more frequently than the usual three-month interval between scheduled LRO deliveries to PDS. The PDS Geosciences Node makes a copy of the contents of the Data Node on every three-month delivery date and maintains this copy online and in its long-term archives. Users who require the most recent LOLA data should use ODE to locate and download the data at the LOLA Data Node.
